Questions & Answers with Graham McDonnell

by Rupert Heather

CP: You changed clubs this season, why?

GM: Because of the new league structure and I felt that Railway would give me the best opportunity to improve my game and give me the best chance of moving to the next level.  Railway has one of the strongest teams around and you can only improve playing and training with the likes of Trent Jonnston, Kevin O'Brien and Kenny Carroll , week in week out.

CP: How do you asses Railway's form so far this season?

GM: We have won the Leinster senior cup, we're in the semi-final of the All Ireland, finals day in the 20/20 and near the top of the league.  So we are doing well in all competitions and giving ourselves good chances at winning a few more trophies...

CP: What is your opinion of the changes to the league structure?

GM: I think overall the idea of the league structure is good, getting all the best teams and players in Leinster playing against each other. That can only be a positive thing for Irish cricket.

CP: Which cricketers or sports people do you admire?

GM: Michael Hussey just because of his work ethic and determination to be the best he can be. Rory McIlroy, I like when young guys burst onto the scene and make a huge name for themselves and can compete and win at the top level like he can.

CP: What have you learned playing alongside Trent Johnston and Kevin O'Brien?

GM:  Everybody knows how much they have achieved for Irish cricket.  They really lift everyone else's game and the team's game.

CP: Do you aspire to play professional cricket one day?

GM: Yes. I have wanted to play cricket for a living since I was 10. The way Irish cricket is heading at the moment it would be great to get involved and achieve my ambitions.

CP: How do you rate your Ireland chances?

GM: I'd like to think I have a good chance of making the step up someday soon. I have had some good performances for the Irish U19s in both the world cup qualifiers and world cup itself. However, I feel I haven't performed to the standard I would have liked at club level recently. If I can get a run of form at club level I would hope to put myself in the selector's minds.

CP:  What would you change about Irish cricket?

GM: The wickets!

CP: What is the most memorable game of cricket you have played and why?

GM: There have been a few. Beating North County in the Irish Senior cup last year, in a game which came to the last ball or winning the Leinster Senior Cup with Railway recently are both up there. However beating Scotland to qualify for the 2008 U19 world cup was my most enjoyable. It was very tight game and with the winner to qualify for the World Cup in Malaysia, there was a lot on the line. The team was in a few tricky situations during our chase and the weather reducing the overs didn't help. In the end we went on to win the game and I remember how good the feeling was to qualify for my first world cup with the U19s.
