Obituary: Trevor Meale

by coverpoint

TREVOR MEALE died in New Zealand on 21 May 2010 aged 81.

A tall left and dark haired left hand hand batsman, who usually opened the innings, he toured Britain and Ireland with the 1958 New Zealanders in  a summer, which even by recent standards was miserably cold and wet, playing in two Tests, but, in keeping with the majority of his team-mates, failed badly against the powerful England attack, managing only 21 runs in four innings.

He was out of touch for the whole tour, though he had experience of English conditions having played much London club cricket.

He appeared in the one day rain affected draw with ireland in College Park, being caught off Cliftonville paceman Wilson Scott for 6 and also failed to reach double figures in two matches against Scotland in the first of which the tourists were lucky to avoid defeat.
