Obituary: Tommy Greenhough

by Editor
Thomas Greenhough died on 15 September 2009 aged 77.

A good leg spin bowler, who - as a teenager on the Old Trafford groundstaff - impressed the great Australian Bill O'Reilly, he had a well disguised googly, Tommy played four Tests for England, all at home, against South Africa and India in 1959 and 1960, taking 16 wickets in all, including 5/35 in India's second innings of the Lord's Test in 1959.

He also toured West Indies in 1959/60 but did not play in any of the Tests. Most of his 751 first class wickets were for Lancashire between 1951 and 1966, where, however, he had to compete up to four other Test spinners for a place.

He played for the county in two first class matches against Scotland in 1955 an 1957. Both matches were rain ruined, the second day being washed out. Tommy worried the Scots in conditions unhelpful to leg spin taking a total of 5 wickets over the two games at 11.40
