PHILIP HUGH CANTLON NIXON died at his home in Knock, Belfast on 3 March 2010, after along struggle against cancer.
A fine cricketer at Campbell College in the mid 1960s, he was an upper order batsman who played for Irish Schools against Welsh Schols at Swansea in 1967, in a side captained by Ian Johnston and including other future prominent players such as Mike Halliday, JG Crothers, Rodney Mollins and Noel Grier. They were outclassed for most of the match by a Welsh side captained by John Bevan, later to win fame on the rugby field.
Philip failed in the first innings but made 29 in the second, the next highest score to a remarkable 154* from Johnston which enabled Ireland having followed on, to declare. However this was no Fowler's or Botham's match, Wales winning by 8 wickets.
Philip completed his education at Dublin University and was a member of the XI in 1970 which, led by Mike Halliday, won the Leinster Senior League for the last time.
A solicitor by profession, he played for NICC for many years.
