LIONEL SEMPLE who died on the 13th November 2009 was a useful all round cricketer, most of whose cricket was played for the RUC, though he also had one very successful season with North Down, and finished his career playing in the North West.
An adaptable batsman, who could bat anywhere in the order, he was also a bowler of some pace, but - particularly at full speed - doubtful accuracy.
His season with North Down in 1991 was an outstanding one in which he not only headed the bowling averages, but played a major part in bringing the NCU Challenge Cup back to the Green after a ten year absence.
He had two good all round matches in the early rounds of the competition. Against Instonians, in the openng tie, he followed made 61 and took 3/18, while his 2/22 against Cregagh was accompanied by another half century, scoring 61.
Twin brother of Adrian Semple, who played twice for Ireland in 1989, Lionel made several appearances for Ulster Town between 1987 and 1991, but did not meet with any spectacular success.
