DERMOT SWEENEY who died in the Mater Hospital, Dublin on 30 December 2009 aged 77 was a past president of Clontarf Cricket Club for whom he played 108 senior matches between 1954 and 1968.
A useful left-handed bat, he usually opened the innings. In all he scored 1,427 runs at 14.41. He hit 4 fifties with a highest score of 77* against Dublin University in College Park.
He also received the club's internal award the Oulton Cup in 1965 and 1966. The cup - or cups - are awarded to the member of each Clontarf XI who has contributed the most on and off the field. Dermot's was for his Second XI performances.
He also was a past vice-president and Honorary Treasury of the Leinster Cricket Union.
Dermot was great company, very witty and was a much sought after dinner speaker.
He will be greatly missed at Castle Avenue and at other cricket venues in Leinster.
