Munster Cricket Union unveil coaching clinics

by David Gash

Press Release from Munster Cricket Union

Mark Garaway, Cricket Ireland's Cricket Operations Director, and the newly appointed Coach Education Officer, Stephen Moreton, will be in Cork later this week where they will be delivering batting and wicket-keeping clinics to a number of Munster's up-and-coming young cricketers.

On Thursday February 18th Stephen, who has first-class cricket experience from his days at Oxford University and Warwickshire CCC, will lead the batting clinic assisted by Jim Doran, Cricket Ireland's Munster Development Officer.

Mark will then lead Friday's wicket-keeping clinic when a number of the  province's promising keepers will be able to benefit from the experience of being coached by the man who was the England team's assistant coach and analyst from February 2006 until he joined Cricket Ireland in August last year.

Commenting on the announcement of the clinics earlier today, Jim Doran said, "This is a very positive and welcome development. It's an indication of the increased level of support being provided to the game in Munster by Cricket Ireland as we look to tap into the undoubted potential that we have in the Munster region."

"Up until very recently", he continued, "we have not had the resources available to bring down guest coaches of the calibre of Mark and Stephen on a regular basis. But that is now changing. It's an exciting prospect for a young Munster-based player to be able to work with a coach like Mark who has worked alongside such current cricketing greats as Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff."

Ted Williamson, Head of MCU's Youth & Coaching, joined Jim Doran in welcoming the announcement of the clinics, "This is a great boost as we prepare for the coming season. The sessions will be an important part of what will be a more intensive pre-season work programme for our promising younger players than we have been able to deliver in the past."

The batting clinic is on Thursday at Ashton School, Cork and runs from 1pm until 4pm. All the available places have been filled.

The wicket-keeping clinic takes place on Friday at the same venue from 1030am-1230pm. There are a couple of places available.

Coaches who wish to attend and observe or attend and participate should contact Jim Doran.
