Crucial weekend for Munster's top two

by David Gash

This weekend, the Munster Senior Cricket League Division One enters into a crucial period that could go a long way to deciding where this year's title goes.

Last weekend saw Cork Harlequins close the gap between themselves and Cork County at the top of the table to just six points as they pulled off a hard fought win against WIT at Farmers Cross. After comfortably beating Midleton on Saturday, Cork County were left stunned as they succumbed to a shock defeat at the hands of Limerick Raiders at the Mardyke on Sunday which has blown the league wide open.

Cork County look to reimpose themselves on the league and get their campaign back to winning ways this weekend when they travel to Waterford to take on WIT on Sunday. The WIT ground at Carriganore, the newest edition to the Munster venue roster, is fast making a name for itself as a ground where wins are notoriously hard to come given its unique conditions. But in Bruce Koch Cork County posses one of the best players in the country at the moment and he is in devastating form with both bat and ball, having saved County from defeat on numerous occasions so far this season; if he gets runs, County will win.

Their closest challengers for the Munster crown, Cork Harlequins, are also on the road as they head east to take on a struggling Midleton side. Inconsistency and player unavailability has blighted Midleton's campaign to date after they made a very promising start to the season. Cork Harlequins captain, Cormac Wilcox, knows his side must win if they are to keep the pressure on Cork County and will be hoping his team's tough match against WIT last Sunday will give his side confidence heading into this game. Opening bowler Ted Williamson has been in fine form for 'Quins having taken 12 wickets in four matches meaning Midleton will have to be watchful when he has the ball in his hand. The outcome of this match will be entirely dependent on the make-up of the Midleton team, but Cork Harlequins are slight favourites to take the points.
